Back Football: Italian FA president banned by UEFA

Carlo Tavecchio, the president of the Italian football federation (FIGC), has been banned for six months by European football governing body UEFA for making racist remarks. The 71-year-old president sparked debates as during his election campaign last July he referred to "eating bananas" in the context of a discussion about foreign players. After the controversy he apologised for his remarks.

The ban prevents Tavecchio from holding any Uefa position and he will also be barred from the next UEFA congress in March 2015. The ban will also relieve him of his duties as a member of UEFA's youth and amateur football committee. UEFA have also ordered him to "organise a special event in Italy aimed at increasing awareness against racism".

Despite the ban Tavecchio will continue as head of the FIGC as the federation's internal prosecutor dropped the inquiry over the comment last month. Tavecchio was elected as president in August, beating former AC Milan midfielder Demetrio Albertini. After former Juventus and Nigeria player Sunday Oliseh described it as "a dark day for football".
