Back Capital One Cup: Arsenal knocked out by Southampton

Southampton added an impressive win to their already great start to the season as they fought back to defeat Arsenal in their Capital One Cup third-round match. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring with a splendid free-kick shot but the Saints produced a great comeback. First Dusan Tadic converted a penalty kick and then Nathaniel Clyne sealed the win with a superb strike.

Southampton's win ends a run of 10 matches without a success against Arsenal in all competitions. Arsenal had won six and drawn four against Southampton since losing 3-2 at St Mary's in the Premier League in November 2002. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said after the match: "It's disappointing because we had a good start and we made two unneeded errors on the two goals - and big ones. We lacked a bit of experience at the back, but overall they did well. We gave a lot and it's frustrating not to be able to score in the second half.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said: "I'm very proud, because winning away against Arsenal, that means a lot. Everybody spoke about the changes of the Arsenal team. I think they made some changes but they took it very seriously. I think the game was on a very high level, with high tempo, and I enjoyed it. We tried to press and tried to play attractive, offensive, and that's not easy, because they have a great team, great players."

With Arsenal out of contention, Chelsea are the favourites to win the League Cup this season, they are 7/2 to clinch the trophy according to Bet365 while Southampton are 10/1 to win it.
