Back Premier League: Arsenal's Olivier Giroud ruled out for four months

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud will most likely not play any more matches in 2014 after having to undergo surgery on a broken leg. The club were handed the results of a second scan on Giroud's leg on Wednesday and it confirmed that the striker had broken his left tibia. The injury happened during Saturday's 2-2 Premier League draw at Everton.

"You'll ask who we'll buy to replace Giroud. At the moment, nobody," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. "Giroud had surgery today for a broken tibia and he will be out for three to four months on the competitive side. He'll be out for two months, but the time he needs to comes back is three to four months. He'll be capable to play again in the Premier League at the end of December."

Without Giroud Arsenal beat Besiktas 1-0 on Wednesday to reach the Champions League group stage for the 17th consecutive season. Alexis Sanchez, a summer signing from Barcelona, replaced Giroud in the central striker role and scored his first goal for his new club against the Turkish side. Joel Campbell, Yaya Sanogo and Lukas Podolski can also play as central strikers for the Gunners.

Giroud joined the Gunners from Montpellier in 2012 and scored 16 goals in 36 Premier League appearances last season. He also managed to score on Saturday at Everton, moments before picking up the injury. Arsenal are already missing Theo Walcott, who is also recovering from a long-term injury, while Mikel Arteta is also struggling with an ankle problem.

Arsenal play at Leicester on Sunday and Alexis Sanchez is 11/8 at Bet365 to score a goal in that match.
