Back Formula 1: Teenager Max Verstappen to drive for Toro Rosso next season

Sixteen-year-old Max Verstappen will become the youngest Formula 1 driver in history as Toro Rosso confirmed he will join the team next season. Verstappen will be 17 next month and currently competes in Formula Three. The Dutchman is the son of former Fromula 1 driver Jos Verstappen and will replace Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne at Toro Rosso.

"Ever since I was seven years old, Formula 1 has been my career goal, so this opportunity is truly a dream come true," said Verstappen. Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari is currently the youngest Formula 1 driver, he was 19 years and 125 days when he raced in Hungary, also for Toro Rosso, in 2009. Verstappen would be following the same career path as four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

The youngest driver to earn a Championship point is also a Toro Rosso team member, Daniil Kvyat, who was 19 when he finished ninth in this season's opening race in Australia. The Russian will be Verstappen's team-mate in 2015. Young Max Verstappen was a kart racer before driving for Van Amersfoort Racing in this year's Formula Three Championship. He won six consecutive races in F3 and has eight wins so far this season.

"We have all worked tremendously hard to reach Formula 1," said Verstappen. "With the return of the Verstappen name to F1, I hope we can relive old memories and I'm hoping to see many fans at all the circuits."
