Online Gambling Operators Face Stricter Regulations in Irish Market
The slow progression of licensing, regulation and taxation of online gambling operators in Ireland continues; however measure have been outlined until the requisite licensing and enforcement agency forms. Michael Noonan, the finance minister, has brought forward an amendment to the gambling laws which were passed earlier in the year. The amendment seeks additional enforcement for the Irish government in terms of stretching its powers beyond tax collection to enforcement actions against unlicensed operators. Should the Betting Amendment Bill pass, online sports betting will be taxed with those accessing Irish punters paying 1 percent of turnover, and betting exchanges 15 percent of profits. The bill will also allow for measures against illegal operators including IP-blocking, marketing restrictions, financial transaction disruptions and black listing.
