Boylesports Manager Uses Stolen Cash to Place Bets with Paddy Power
Cork Ireland Boylesports retail betting shop manager, 33-year-old Ronan Crowley stole hundreds of thousands of Euros over the course of two years which he spent on sports betting. Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin sented Crowley to five years in jail. According to The Irish Examiner, Crowley gambled the majority of the Euro 590,810 he had taken placing bets online with Paddy Power until the company flagged his account for his highrolling activity. Paddy Power launched an investigation and restricted Crowley from making further deposits; however Boylesports was not notified. When questioned by Paddy Power, Crowley claimed he had inherited the cash. “They [Paddy Power] failed to notify Boylesports. They knew he was a manager at Boylesports,” said Detective Padraig Harrington. “This is a truly extraordinary case," said the judge. "In excess of half a million Euro was stolen from Boylesports over almost two years, a significant breach of trust. “It beggars belief that a company like Boylesports are so disorganised in their set-up they did not know this was going on for almost two years - a man entrusted to make lodgements was not making the lodgements. “One would expect this would be picked up overnight or within a week in a properly-run business. “Paddy Power knew or suspected there was something wrong, had the accused as a monitored customer and seemed to be slow in either reporting it or detecting it. Again that is quite extraordinary.”
