Back UEFA Champions League Final: Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid preview

Atletico Madrid are close to achieving an unlikely double after winning the Primera Liga title as they take on city rivals Real in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday in Lisbon. The league title win was their first since 1996, and they clinched it in a final showdown against Barcelona at Camp Nou last Saturday.

In the Chempions League Atletico Madrid defied the odds by beating Chelsea in the semi-finals, while Real overcame defending champions Bayern Munich. Atletico are concerned about the fitness of their key striker ahead of the final. Diego Costa suffered a hamstring strain against Barcelona last weekend and might be out of contention for the final. For Real Madrid the news on the fitness front was good, Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit to play after missing his side's last two games with a muscle injury.

With or without Diego Costa, head coach Diego Simeone is confident his players are prepared for the challenge. "From the strikers right through to the goalkeeper, the team is aware of how we need to play in order to succeed, in order to highlight our strengths and hide our weaknesses - because we do have weaknesses, we just hope not to show them," he said. "It's a historic rivalry. It's great, both in terms of the matches themselves and the fact that in one city you have such a powerful team as Real Madrid and a battling team such as Atletico Madrid. Each team uses the tools it has at its disposal and it's a great rivalry, no matter which team you support."

Real are looking to grab their 10th Champions League crown, and Portuguese star Ronaldo admits that there is huge pressure on the team. "It is a moment that all Madridistas are dreaming about," he said. "We are all very excited, so we have to win. It will be a special game. I will be playing in my home country." This will be the first meeting between two teams from the same city in the history of European Cup and Champions League finals.

Real will be without suspended Xabi Alonso, while Karim Benzema (hamstring) and Pepe (calf) are injury doubts. Atletico are not yet sure of the fitness of Arda Turan (knee).
