Cycling: Cadel Evans leads Giro d'Italia after first week
Cadel Evans managed to hold onto the Giro d'Italia leader's jersey on Sunday as Pieter Weening claimed the stage win in an uphill finish. Weening broke from the leading group along with Italian rider Davide Malacarne with five kilometers to go and then was faster than his companion in the sprint. Evans ordered his team to up the pace in the final 40 kilometres of the race to ensure he maintained his 57-second General Classification advantage. "I think we have to be satisfied with our work today," said BMC team captain Evans. He added: "The guys who are gambling are winning the stages, but I am very happy with the position we are in. I will rest happily tomorrow." The riders will have a rest day on Monday as the race resumes with a flat stage on Tuesday. "I was able to gamble a bit in the last few hundred metres and I was stronger in the last sprint," said stage winner Weening, who held the leader's jersey for three days after winning a stage of the race in 2011. "I had tried to make as high a pace as I could before that, but I was unable to drop Malacarne. He was very strong." The really tough mountain stages are yet to come though, here are the current outright general classification odds at Bet365: Nairo Quintana - 6/5 Cadel Evans - 2/1 Rigoberto Uran - 9/2 Domenico Pozzovivo - 15/2 Rafal Majka - 22/1
