Tennis: Novak Djokovic misses Madrid Masters but should be ready for French Open

World number two Novak Djokovic has pulled out of this week's Madrid Masters due to a wrist injury. According to the Serbian player his right wrist injury has "flared up again". Djokovic has suffered this injury in April when he exited the Monte Carlo Masters and he had hopet it would not be very serious.

Djokovic hopes to be ready to play in Rome next week, the last major tournament before the French Open which begins on May 25. "I did everything possible in order to play in Madrid," he said. "Now I will take some time to recover and heal my injury." The six-time Grand Slam winner's schedule includes the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, which begins on Sunday, May 11. Djokovic had won consecutive Masters 1000 titles in Shanghai, Paris, Indian Wells and Miami before losing to Roger Federer in the semi-finals in Monte Carlo.

The French Open is the only Grand Slam Djokovic has not won yet but he came close last year when he lost to Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals in five sets. With Djokovic out of the way Rafael Nadal is the top favourite to clinch the title on home soil in Madrid. Nadal is also the favourite to win at Roland Garros, here are the outright odds at SkyBet:

Rafael Nadal - 1/1
Novak Djokovic - 15/8
Stanislas Wawrinka - 13/2
Roger Federer - 12/1
David Ferrer - 18/1
