New Jersey Spends Millions to Legalize Sports Betting
New Jersey has set its sights on doing away with the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act and introducing intrastate sports wagering but it has been an expensive endeavor. The state has already spent $2.8 million in taxpayer funds pursuing its case in court. New Jersey continues to fight to defend its right to enjoy sports wagering and awaits a decision as to whether its appeal will make it to the US Supreme Court. "The total amount to be borne by taxpayers will be higher when other attorneys' fees are added; for example, former Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver and former Senate President Steve Sweeney became part of the case in November 2012, but information on their fees was not available from the attorney general's office," according to an Associated Press report.
