World Cup: Andros Townsend to miss final tournament
Tottenham and England winger Andros Townsend will miss this summer's World Cup due to an ankle injury that puts him out of contention for 10 weeks. The 22-year-old winger came on for the last 12 minutes of Saturday's 1-0 win at Stoke, but then left the stadium wearing a protective boot. The player is set to have surgery after scans showed damaged ligaments. Arsenal forward Theo Walcott will also miss the World Cup with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Townsend was among the favourites to make the World Cup squad after he made an impressive England debut in October, scoring in a 4-1 win against Montenegro. He also played big part in beating Poland in the decisive game to secure qualification for the World Cup in Brazil, which begins on 12 June. Townsend has made 33 appearances this season but has not appeared in the starting eleven since the 1-0 defeat by Arsenal in March. England coach Roy Hodgson will have to name a 23-man World Cup squad, plus seven standby players, on 12 May. England will play in World Cup Group D alongside Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica. Uruguay and Italy are favourites to win the group, both 13/8 at Bet365, while England are 9/4 to win the group.
