Transfer News: Jermain Defoe to leave Tottenham for Toronto FC
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe will sign for Toronto FC next Monday, media reports claim, quoting sources inside the clubs. Defoe has been tipped to join the Major League Soccer side for quite some time, especially since his one-time Spurs team-mate Ryan Nelsen is now head coach at Toronto. The 31-year-old striker will fly to Canada over the weekend in order to negotiate his contract and eventually put pen to paper. He is expected to be loaned back to Tottenham until March 1, since the MLS season won't start until the middle of March. The England international was not mentioned clearly on Toronto's official website but they have posted an image on the homepage to promote an imminent "big deal". Defoe has spent nine years with Tottenham, scoring 142 goals in the process and becoming the fifth-best among the club's all-time leading scorers. This season he managed to bag nine goals but most of those were in the Europa League as Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor were preferred in the starting line up for Premier League matches. Reports in Canada claim that Toronto will pay around 6 million pounds for Defoe, whose current deal with Spurs has 18 months left to run. Toronto are also trying to snatch USA midfield star Michael Bradley from Italian side Roma. If both moves go through the total cost between club fees and player contracts would be over 100 million dollars and would represent to of the biggest transfers ever for a Major League Soccer club. Meanwhile Tottenham will have to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, here are the odds for the match at Bet365: Tottenham win - 4/11 Draw - 4/1 Crystal Palace win - 13/2
