Red Devils boss David Moyes wants to increase his chances of snatching a trophy in his debut season at Old Trafford by reaching the Capital One Cup final. But Tuesday's Capital One Cup semi-final first leg at Sunderland comes just 48 hours after Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup at home by Swansea. Moreover, Moyes and his men are 11 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
"It has always been vital to get to every cup final I can," Moyes said. "I try to win all of them and I will try to win this one as well." Moyes fielded a weakened starting eleven against Swansea and his choice proved wrong as they lost 2-1, their fourth defeat in the last six home matches. Strikers Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie missed the match against Swansea and are still doubtful, along with other five injured United players.
If they beat Sunderland, United could play the final in March against rivals Manchester City, who face West Ham in the other semi-final. United midfielder Darren Fletcher said the Sunderland game was "massive", mostly because of the FA Cup disappointment: "If you can't lift yourselves for a League Cup semi-final then it's no good. We know it's a quick turnaround but we need to really put in a performance now and show people we are a good team and we are looking to win competitions."
