It's a very special occasion for Liverpool as they will climb to the top of the Premier League table if they continue their winning run against Cardiff City on Saturday. The Reds are coming into this game after three consecutive and very convincing wins over Norwich, West Ham and Tottenham. They have scored 14 goals in those three games, culminating with a 5-0 win at Tottenham last Sunday. Moreover, that last result was achieved without captain Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge, both injured.
"The squad we have at the moment is still relatively small, we have got a few players out," manager Brendan Rodgers said. "But I'll always look from within, like I have done whenever we have had injuries, when young Jon Flanagan came into the team or Raheem Sterling came into the team. There's very much a togetherness here, and that's one of the key facets of the season so far." Liverpool will also miss defenders Sebastian Coates and Jose Enrique in addition to midfielder Gerrard and striker Sturridge.
Cardiff grabbed a much-needed victory over West Brom last week, with Peter Whittingham's header ending their five-match run without a win. Cardiff are currently 15th in the table, four points above the relegation zone, but the relationship between chairman Vincent Tan and manager Malky Mackay is anything but cordial. Cardiff have only scored once in their last four matches and they might miss former Liverpool attacker Craig Bellamy as he will face a late fitness test. The two sides have only met twice in the last 50 years, each time in the League Cup, with Liverpool prevailing on both occasions.
