Champions League: Manchester United vs Shakhtar Donetsk preview
The Premier League champions come into this match after a terrible streak in the domestic league, they have suffered back to back defeats at Old Trafford. They need just one point against the Ukrainian champions to make sure they finish top of the group. Shakhtar on the other hand need all three points to be certain of booking their place in the knockout stage. United have already qualified thanks to the dominant 5-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen in November, but Shakhtar need to match or better Leverkusen's result at Real Sociedad in order to progress. United had all sorts of problems at home but they are still unbeaten in Europe. "It's important we give ourselves every chance of progressing even further in the Champions League by finishing top," manager David Moyes said. "It won't make it easier but it will give us a little bit of an advantage by having the second game in the last 16 at home. We will do everything we can to be top and, as well as that, we're unbeaten in the group and want to stay unbeaten if we can make that happen." Striker Wayne Rooney will play after serving a one-match domestic ban but midfielder Michael Carrick is definitely out. Moyes suggested that he might decide to rest some key players though. "We have qualified, so it gives me a chance to have a look at that," he said. Shakhtar come into the game after four consecutive wins in all competitions. They beat Real Sociedad 4-0 in the last Champions League and the result put them above Leverkusen. Shakhtar drew 1-1 with United in October.
