Champions League: Manchester City advance to knockout phase
Alvaro Negredo bagged a hat-trick to put Manchester City through to the Champions League knockout phase for the first time thanks to a comfortable win over CSKA Moscow. Sergio Aguero scored the first two goal and then set up another for Negredo and Manchester City were leading 3-0 after the opening half hour. Seydou Doumbia pulled one back for CSKA before the interval but Samir Nasri set up Negredo's second just after half-time before Doumbia reduced the arrears once again. Negredo wrapped things up with his third goal of the match for a victory that was never in doubt. The goals started flowing as early as the third minute when midfielder Zoran Tosic fouled David Silva and Aguero converted the resulting penalty kick. The Argentinian struck again after 20 minutes, receiving Nasri's pass before turning and scoring with a perfect finish. Then Aguero set up Negredo with a perfect low cross, leaving the Spanish striker with a simple finish. The Russians pulled one back just before the break when Doumbia broke through the defence and rounded Pantilimon to score. City replied six minutes after the restart when Yaya Toure's pass into the area found Nasri, who knocked the ball across for Negredo to score another easy goal. Bayern won 1-0 at Plzen in the other group match and the results put both the German champions and Manchester City through to the next round. Bayern Munich are 11/4 at Bet365 to win the Champions League again this season while Manchester City are 16/1 to lift the trophy.
