Tennis: Andy Murray to end season early
Andy Murray will have to undergo surgery to settle a back injury on Monday and he is unlikely to play again this season. The 26-year-old Wimbledon winner has a disc problem in his lower back and will miss the remaining tournaments of the season, including November's World Tour Finals in London. The injury forced him to withdraw from the French Open. He made a triumphant return to become Britain's first male Wimbledon singles champion since 1936, but then struggled on the hard courts and lost in the US Open quarter-finals. Murray tweeted on Thursday: "Having operation on Monday. Will let everyone know how it goes. I'll be 'back' stronger." The Briton has suffered due to this injury for two years as it affects a nerve in his lower back which triggers tremendous pain down his hip and upper leg. Murray had pain-killing injections before the 2012 French Open and withdrew from this year's Rome Masters midway through a match against Marcel Granollers. Murray took the decision to have surgery after last weekend's Davis Cup tie on clay in Croatia. He had been scheduled to play three more events in Asia this season, including the Shanghai Masters, then the Paris Masters before the ATP World Tour Finals at London's O2 Arena from 4-11 November. If the surgery goes well Murray should be back in action next season. Bet365 have already set up a special Andy Murray bet, you can choose how many Grand Slam tournaments he will win in 2014. Here are the odds: None - 5/4 One - 11/8 Two - 9/2 Three - 20/1 Four - 200/1
