Judge Rules in Favor of Centrebet in Online Gambling Case
Norwegian highroller, Bjarte Baasland lost a A$15 million case to recover losses from Australian betting company Centrebet, acquired by William Hill. The Supreme Court decision ruled in favor of the gaming sites in the suit in which Baasland was attempting to recover losses from both bet365 and Centrebet after losing more than 70 million Norwegian kronor (A$15 million). The cash used to gamble was borrowed from family and friends and masked as bad investments in dotcom start-ups. Baasland says that Centrebet failed to recognize his gambling problem and put a stop to his deposits. The losses have caused his family to go bankrupt and Centrebet is to blame by sending him promotional offers. The company was unaware of his situation and presiding Justice Graham Hiley ruled that Centrebet did not owe Baasland anything and has been ordered to pay Centrebet's legal costs. His father, former Bishop in the Church of Norway, had to resign from his position in the church once the news of this case was made public.
