Kenneth Baran Pleads Guilty to Association with Illegal Gambling Ring
Kenneth Baran, 50, has entered a guilty plea for his involvement in illegal online gambling with the Beteagle.com website. The Costa Rican operation has been under federal investigation since 2010 and 14 individuals are believed to have been associated with an organized crime ring. Newark Federal Judge Claire Cecchi heard Bran's plea on Monday with regard to illegal sports betting. Sentencing has been scheduled for January 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. and Baran could face two years in jail and a $250,000 fine. Federal investigation of Beteagles revealed that those involved were operating an illegal gambling ring in northern New Jersey among other crimes of extortion, theft, interstate transportation of stolen property and illegal gambling. Court documents indicate that several of the accused have been granted a continuance "to allow the parties to complete plea negotiations”.
