Capital One Cup: Liverpool taken to extra-time by Notts County
Liverpool had a much more difficult match than expected as they needed all their strength in extra-time to beat League One side Notts County in the Capital One Cup. The Reds looked perfectly on track when Raheem Sterling scored a great opener after beating two defenders and Daniel Sturridge fired in a second goal. Yoann Arquin clawed one back for Notts County who then made it all square through Adam Coombes. The game went into extra-time but Sturridge scored again for Liverpool before Hordan Henderson finally settled it with a good shot from 18 yards out. The Reds were forced to finish the game with just 10 men as Kolo Toure was stretchered out in extra-time, with all three substitutes already on the pitch. Defender Aly Cissokho also had to leave the game due to an injury and ha managed to get in just nine minutes on his first start for the club after joining from Valencia on loan. But things seemed almost perfect for Liverpool at that point as Sterling had already given them the lead with a fine finish after cutting past two Magpies defenders. Daniel Agger could have doubled the advantage but headed against the post before Sturridge found the back of the net with a crisp finish from inside the penalty area. Liverpool were in control but failed to capitalize as both Steven Gerrard and Toure were denied by the woodwork. County pulled one back early in the second half and Liverpool lost yet another man to injury as Joe Allen came limping off the pitch. The fightback was complete just six minutes before the end of regular time when Arquin darted past the Liverpool defence before setting up an easy finish for Coombes. Toure went off early in extra time, leaving Liverpool with just 10 men, but Sturridge managed to score in the 105th minute and then Henderson wrapped things up with a fine strike. Liverpool are 8/1 to win the Capital One Cup this season at Bet365 while favourites Chelsea are 6/1 to win the trophy.
