Robin van Persie bagged two goals to give new manager David Moyes a winning debut at Manchester United as the Red Devils claimed the FA Community Shield at Wembley. The Dutch striker opened the scoring after just six minutes with a powerful header and then wrapped things up after the interval with a deflected shot.
United had a dominant start and they took control of the match in the sixth minute when Evra crossed into the area for Van Persie who produced a pinpoint header from 15 yards to send the ball into the corner of the net. Wigan were unable to react in the following minutes but they did produce a couple of half-chances before the break through Emmerson Boyce and then Leon Barnett.
Wigan had a better start in the second half but their hopes of coming back into the match were shattered by Van Persie in the 59th minute as the Dutch striker received a pass from Danny Welbeck at the edge of the area before firing a low shot that went into the back of the net after taking a deflection off James Perch's heel. Antonio Valencia could have added a third goal for United but his shot went wide.
United will face a a much tougher test at Swansea on Saturday in their first Premier League match of the season, here are the odds at Bet365 for that clash:
Swansea win - 3/1
Draw - 5/2
Manchester United win - 10/11
