Another Guilty Plea in Relation to Illegal Costa Rican Sportsbook Operation
Joseph Borea, 56, is the most recent individual to plead guilty before U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant in Hartford, Connecticut for his involvement in illegal activity at sports betting website 44Wager.com. He will face charges for violation of Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). Borea, Dean DePreta, Richard Uva and 17 additional individuals were arrested earlier this year for participating in illegal online bookmaking operations and card gambling clubs. Both DePreta and Uva have already pled guilty and are to be sentenced. Borea faces sentencing on October 30th according to Judge Bryant said. He was bonded out on June 13th and has turned over $75k. According to court documents and statements, the illegal gambling activity was monitored for months prior to the bust. Law enforcement utilized wiretaps with involvement from FBI Fairfield County Organized Crime Task Force; the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation; and the Stamford Police Department. Those that have pled guilty have already agreed to turn over a combined total of over $1.4 million.
