Premier League: Mourinho says Rooney is his only transfer target
Returning Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says Wayne Rooney is his only summer transfer target after Manchester United rejected their offer for the England striker. The Chelsea boss was also keen on denying suggestions that David Luiz or Juan Mata were offered in part exchange for Rooney. The news comes exactly on the day United vice-chairman Ed Woodward returned early from the club's pre-season tour to deal with some "transfer business". Manchester United insist that Woodward's return is not connected in any way with the Rooney situation. Mourinho said: "We want the player. Now it's up to Manchester United. I think that this situation is clear - nothing is a secret any more. The official bid is just about a certain amount of money and doesn't involve players. We made the bid and now we have nothing more to say." United had rejected Chelsea's offer for Rooney and insisted the striker was not for sale. Rooney is said to be angry after new manager David Moyes said that Robin van Persie is his main striker. "Overall, my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him," Moyes said. Rooney has expressed his disappointment with his situation to club officials and insisted he will not accept a backup role to van Persie. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were also linked with Rooney but they didn't make any official bids while Barcelona don't seem interested any more after having signed Brazil forward Neymar. Paris St-Germain have also been linked with the England international, but they have just signed Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani from Napoli.
