Big Crackdown on Online Gambling by Thai Authorities
In a major online gambling bust, investigators from the Thai police Special Investigations Department have broken a major online gambling ring that steered punters to at least six un-named online betting sites. According to the Department spokesman, Tarit Pengdit, the police also froze a number of bank accounts associated with the ring and containing the equivalent of over US$320,000, and they have also issued warrants of arrest for a number of individuals who are currently being sought. The frozen accounts were being linked to over a thousand bank accounts owned by punters, it was specified, and the ring was supported by a core of some 200 high rollers, who will also be questioned in the near future. According to investigators' estimates, the ring's business was sending between US$6 million and US$16 million worth of business a month to the online betting sites involved, and extensive steps have been taken to cover the tracks of these operations.
