NFL Player, Aaron Hernandez, Faces Murder Charges
New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, was arrested from his home and charged on Wednesday with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a friend, Odin Lloyd. On Thursday the judge denied him bail. Hernandez's lawyer argued that the case against him is circumstantial and he is not a flight risk but it had no effect on the judge's decision. The prosecution says the evidence in this case is "overwhelming." After a search of Hernandez's Hummer, police found an ammunition clip matching the caliber of casings found at the crime scene yet he had plead not guilty. The victim's body was found by in an industrial park close to Hernandez's home and reported by a jogger nearly two weeks ago. Prosecutors referred to the murder as an execution-style shooting prompted by Lloyd's conversation with certain individuals at a nightclub. Hernandez could face life in jail if convicted. He has already lost his $40 million contract with the Patriots. The NFL team released him less than two hours after his arrest. The New England Patriots issued the following statement: “A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
