FIFA Confederations Cup: Spain to face Italy in semi finals
Spain set up a clash with Italy in the Confederations Cup semi-finals after they defeated Nigeria to finish top of the Group B standings. Left back Jordi Alba scored twice, John Mikel Obi and Sunday Mba went close for Nigeria while Fernando Torres scored just two minutes after coming off the bench. Nigeria had another chance through substitute Gambo Muhammad with 15 minutes left but he fired wide after being perfectly set up by Ahmed Musa. The reigning world champions took control of the match right from the start and Andres Iniesta tested goalkeeper Enyeama before setting up Alba's opening goal after three minutes. Spain needed a point to make sure of their place in the last four so coach Vicente Del Bosque fielded his best eleven. Nigeria had a chance to qualify as well so they were keen on attacking but Ramos denied Mikel before Valdes saved Mba's shot. Spain had the better chances before half time but Roberto Soldado squandered two of them, denied by Eneyama's good saves on both occasions. Fabregas had the last chance before the break when he hit the post. Nigeria reacted just after the break when Musa crossed for Ideye but the striker was unable to control the ball. Spain delivered the fatal blow through Fernando Torres who headed in Pedro's cross just two minutes after entering the match as a substitute. Muhammad missed the final chance for Nigeria before Alba rounded the goalkeeper to make it 3-0 for La Roja.
