Premier League: Liverpool to bid for Shakhtar's Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Liverpool's quest to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season seems to be revolving around Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, which is believed to be the their major summer signing. The 24-year-old skillful midfielder is understood to have a £20m release clause in his contract with Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk and Liverpool have indicated they are willing to pay that much. There may be some competition for Mkhitaryan from other clubs though, the midfielder scored 25 league goals for Shakhtar last season. Mkhitaryan has also been linked with Juventus and Borussia Dortmund but Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers regards him as a key element of his plans to improve the squad for next season. Mkhitaryan began his career at Pyunik in Armenia and scored 30 goals in 70 league appearances. He then moved to Ukraine to join Metalurh Donetsk in the summer of 2009 and, after scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances, was signed by Shakhtar in August 2010. He has scored 38 goals in 72 league games for the club. Liverpool are also looking to sign a new goalkeeper and they are in discussions with Sunderland for Simon Mignolet. The Reds have offered 8 million pounds but Sunderland are asking for 10 million. Liverpool have already signed Manchester City defender Kolo Toure and they have also announced a deal for Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas. Liverpool are 2/1 at Bet365 to finish in the top four next season, while their odds to win the title are at 33/1.
