News came this week that the First Tier Tax Tribunal (FTT) has refused to give HM Revenue and Customs permission to appeal a decision made earlier this year in favour of online gambling group Sportech plc, thus giving the company the right to claim back an estimated GBP 80 million worth of tax.
To remind our readers, the whole issue arose around the payment of Valued Added Tax (VAT) for which Sportech claimed a refund from the government in the amount of around GBP 80 million.
It has been noted in the Sportech statement regarding this new development that "HMRC have the option of applying to the Upper Tribunal for permission to appeal against the decision of the FTT and have until 1 July 2013 to make such an application."
