European Tour CEO George O'Grady Apologizes for Using Term “Colored”
Reacting to the rivalry between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, the head of the European golf tour used the term ''colored'' during a live television interview Thursday. European Tour CEO George O'Grady was caught on live television saying ''most of Sergio's friends are colored athletes in the United States.'' In the United States, the term is no longer considered politically correct and is downright offensive to some. ''I deeply regret using an inappropriate word in a live interview for Sky Sports for which I unreservedly apologize,'' O'Grady, who is British, later said in response to his comment. The issues between the two golfers has become apparent over the past couple of weeks when Garcia suggested that Woods intentionally stirred up the gallery as he was playing a shot at The Players Championship. While at a dinner with teammates, Golf Channel's Steve Sands, playfully asked Garcia if he would have Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open. ''We'll have him round every night,'' Garcia replied. ''We will serve fried chicken.'' With regard to his comment, Garcia said, ''I feel sick about it and I feel truly, truly sorry.” He intended the response to be humorous but instead it came across as ''totally stupid and out of place.'' In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Woods said, ''The comment that was made wasn't silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate. I'm confident that there is real regret the remark was made. The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move on and talk about golf.''
