Aussie Division of Betfair Pleads Guilty of Offering Gambling Incentives
This week the Australian division of the online gambling group Betfair pleaded guilty to offering inducements to gamble in its promotions to players, despite the action being forbidden in the state of Victoria, where Betfair is licensed. Reportedly, Betfair entered its guilty plea on May 21 before Victorian Magistrate Phillip Goldberg who placed the company on a "good conduct," non-conviction bond for 12 months, because the company had immediately pulled the offending promotional offers, and assisted investigators on being advised of the transgression. The charges against Betfair included offering clients who deposited A$50 or more a A$50 "win or refund" inducement along with small promotional gifts redeemable at the Melbourne Racing Club. A similar offense was made by Paddy Power's Sportsbet Australian subsidiary, which is appealing the conviction.
