New Online Gambling Rings Busted by Thai and Malaysian Police
Small online sports betting operations were targeted by the police in Thailand and Malaysia once again this week. Namely, in Thailand the local police raided an online football gambling den in a condo on Soi Wongamart, North Pattaya, operated by a gang of South Koreans. They received information about the gang, and with search warrants entered the condo in cooperation with officers of the Transnational Crime Suppression Center in Chonburi, seizing an unknown number of computers and other evidence, and arresting 8 people including the condo owner, Yun Su Kim. Then, thanks to the information obtained in the first raid, the police went to another venue on Soi Arunothai, Central Pattaya, where another 5 people were detained. Everyone detained pleaded guilty to illegal gambling offences, revealing that they were brought into the venues by a South Korean countryman called Kang, who is now the subject of an on-going investigation. As for Malaysia, the police in the Seberang Perai Selatan area raided 11 online gambling premises, detaining 35 men suspected of being involved in online gambling activities. According to Seberang Perai Selatan OCPD Supt Shafien Mamat, 12 employees were arrested during the raids, and urine tests on three suspects found them positive for the narcotic syabu, so investigations would be carried out under Section 4B (a) Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. "We seized gambling materials worth about RM260,000, including 130 computers," the police spokesman said.
