The San Francisco Giants have finalized an agreement with NL MVP and batting champion Buster Posey. The deal seals his position on the team for nine years and gives him a whopping $167 million contract.
The details of the contract were made public by the team on Friday. It also includes a club option for 2022 that could increase Posey's earnings to $186 million over the course of ten years. There's also a special clause in the contract that prohibits him from being traded.
Posey's deal has made history for the team as it is currently the longest for a catcher and the largest in the history exceeding Matt Cain's $127.5m, six-year contract.
Posey was set to receive $8 million this year but this has changed slightly. Instead he will receive a $7 million signing bonus, with $5 million headed his way on October 15th and the remainder payable on January 15th. His paycheck for this year has also been decreased to $3 million.
Not a bad paycheck for playing a game that you love and you're good at!
