Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez praised Frank Lampard who scored his 200th goal for the Blues, leaving him only two goals shy of Bobby Tambling's club record. The 34-year-old midfielder headed home the opening goal for the Blues in their 2-0 win over West Ham on Sunday. "We were expecting him to score today, because the team were creating chances," the Chelsea interim boss said. "He has broken a great record and hopefully can score more goals."
Lampard joined Chelsea from West Ham in 2001 and says he never believed he would reach the landmark. "It is one of my best days," Lampard said. "Obviously, winning the Champions League and championships are the best, but personally getting 200 goals for the club, I never thought I would touch that so I am pleased to get it. Everyone keeps talking about the goalscoring record, I would rather people kept quiet. The important thing is trying to score goals to win games. We are in good form and everyone is at it. There is a good feeling around the place and we need to carry it on until the end of the season."
The Blues dominated the match at Stamford Bridge and took the lead in the first half when Lampard headed in Eden Hazard's through ball. Then Hazard scored one himself after the break, cutting in from the right flank before firing a pinpoint shot past goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. Chelsea could have scored quite a few more but January signing Demba Ba squandered several good chances.
This was Chelsea's 16th win and it moves them a point above Tottenham in third place as the Spurs earlier lost to Fulham. The Blues also are within four points of second-placed Manchester City. Chelsea are now favourites to finish in the top four according to Be365, they are priced at 1/7 for a top-four finish while Arsenal are priced at 8/11 and Tottenham at 1/1.
