Europa League: Tottenham survive Inter fightback to qualify
Emmanuel Adebayor scored the decisive goal in extra time to earn Tottenham a place in the Europa League quarter-finals after they held on to knock out a rampant Inter. The Italian side pulled off an amazing fightback to overturn a three-goal deficit from the first leg as Antonio Cassano and Rodrigo Palacio scored before William Gallas put one into his own net to make it all square on aggregate. The game went into extra time and Adebayor scored for Spurs but Inter fought back again and moved just one goal away from qualification as Ricardo Alvarez scored. Tottenham held on though and qualified on away goals. Inter could have avoided extra time but Esteban Cambiasso fired wide and also pushed forward in extra time after making it 4-1 but the fifth goal never came. This was Tottenham's first defeat in this season's Europa League. Manager Andre Villas-Boas decided to rest Gareth Bale and sent in Gylfi Sigurdsson on the left flank and it was Inter who drew first blood as Cassano fired home after wasting two equally good chances. Six minutes later Inter had another good chance when Cassano played a perfect assist for Rodrigo Palacio but the Argentine striker's shot hit the bar. Tottenham replied through Adebayor who had a great chance to score a vital away goal for Spurs but he fired over the bar when clean through on goal. The African striker then set up Jan Vertonghen shortly after the break but it was Inter who scored again on 52 minutes when Cambiasso set up Palacio who made it 2-0 with a cool finish. Things got worse for Spurs when a free kick from Cassano was deflected into the back of the net by an unlucky William Gallas. The tie was level at that point and it could have gone either way before the extra period as Naughton and then Cambiasso went close to scoring before Gallas squandered a great chance just before full time. Adebayor finally scored the decisive goal in extra time but Tottenham had to work hard to survive as Alvarez pulled another one back for Inter. Tottenham will have to recover from this effort in time for Sunday's Premier League clash with Fulham, here are the odds for that match at Bet365: Tottenham win - 1/2 Draw - 7/2 Fulham win - 13/2
