Spanish Cup: Barcelona suffer painful defeat against Real Madrid
Real Madrid produced an upset at Nou Camp against arch rivals Barcelona, won 3-1 in the second leg completing a 4-2 aggregate win in the Copa del Rey semi-final. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Gerard Pique's tackle brought him down inside the box, Messi then fired one just wide and Ronaldo scored again after half time on a counter attack. Young defender Raphael Varane then made it 3-0 with an accurate header and Jordi Alba scored the consolation goal for the hosts. Barcelona had an encouraging start, Pedro dribbled past Fabio Coentrao to create a chance for Messi but the Argentinian superstar fired just wide. Real Madrid were not sitting back either and they produced the breakthrough when Pique was surpassed by Ronaldo inside the penalty area and the defender tackled carelessly to bring down the Portuguese forward. The referee pointed to the spot and Ronaldo coolly converted the penalty kick. Barca tried to reply but they were unable to create any clear cut chances until Messi's free kick that went inches wide. Barcelona continued the attacks after the break but they were leaving more and more gaps behind and Real Madrid speculated such an opportunity when Khedira played long for Di Maria who dribbled past Puyol before firing a powerful shot, parried by Pinto but straight into the path of Ronaldo who made it 2-0. Raphael Varane piled on the misery for Barca's fans as he headed home on a corner kick and Real Madrid were set for the final. Jordi Alba scored a fine goal for Barca later on but it was just a slight consolation for the home fans. The two bitter rivals will battle it out again in just a few days as they meet at Bernabeu on Saturday for a league clash.
