FA Cup: Manchester United reach quarter finals
Nani scored once and created another goal for Javier Hernandez taking Manchester United past Reading and into the FA Cup quarter-finals. The Portuguese winger came on in the first half for injured Phil Jones and scored the opener from Antonio Valencia's pass. Then Nani crossed for Hernandez who headed past goalkeeper Adam Federici. Jobi McAnuff pulled one back for Reading but United held on to reach the last eight. Ferguson made no less than eight changes to the side which earned a 1-1 away draw against Real Madrid in their Champions League match last Wednesday, with only David de Gea, Jones and Danny Welbeck retaining their places. The Red Devils dominated the opening 45 minutes but the visitors showed solid defending and goalkeeper Federici didn't have too many shots to save before the break. He did well to stop Welbeck early on and then pulled off a great double save midway through the first half denying both Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young on the rebound. At the other end of the pitch Adam Le Fondre tested De Gea with a shot from the edge of the penalty area but then Manchester United came really close through Nani who struck the post with a fine volley before having another good strike turned away by Federici. Manchester United resumed the attacks after the break and nearly found the breakthrough when Vidic's header was cleared off the line by Hunt. Then Federici was called into action again to deny Anderson before Nani fired one just wide. The home side finally broke through when Nani received Valencia's pass and fired into the corner of the net. Reading nearly scored an instant equaliser but De Gea stopped Le Fondre with a fine save. The Red Devils doubled their lead three minutes later when he headed home Nani's cross but McAnuff scored nine minutes from time to set up a tense finale. Le Fondre nearly made it all square while Hernandez was denied by Federici at the other end of the pitch. Despite their impressive run so far Manchester United are not the top favourites to win the FA Cup at Bet365, they are priced at 9/4 while Manchester City are the favourites at 13/8.
