Arsenal's hopes of a first trophy since 2005 became purely theoretical after they were defeated quite clearly by Bayern Munich at Emirates Stadium. Arsene Wenger wanted an instant response from his players after the rather shameful FA Cup fifth-round defeat at home by Championship side Blackburn Rovers on Saturday but that reaction didn't come. Bundesliga leaders Bayern established a commanding advantage ahead of the second leg of this last 16 tie in the Allianz Arena as Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller scored early on to make the match a lot simpler for the Germans. Lukas Podolski pulled one back for the Gunners after the break but Mario Mandzukic restored Bayern's two-goal lead.
Arsenal needed some confidence but Bayern gave them no chance to gain it as they struck twice inside the opening 21 minutes. Kroos scored the first goal after just seven minutes with a fine volley from the edge of the penalty area and then Bayern struck again on a poorly defended corner kick, Szczesny parried Daniel van Buyten's header but Mueller was quick to react and fired into the roof of the net. Arsenal tried to react but it was Mandzukic who had a great chance moments before the break as his header went inches wide.
Arsenal finally replied 10 minutes after the interval when Lukas Podolski took advantage of an error from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on a corner kick and headed home. Wenger made a double change with 19 minutes left, sending on Olivier Giroud and Tomas Rosicky for Podolski and Aaron Ramsey and Giroud almost made an instant impact but his powerful half-volley from inside the penalty area went straight at the keeper.
Bayern then killed it off as they scored the third goal in a rather fortuitous manner: substitute Arjen Robben played in Lahm, the Bayern captain then found Mandzukic, who fell and half-hit his finish but that wrong-footed Szczesny and ended up in the net.
Arsenal would need a miracle to qualify at this point but if they do and you bet on that you could make quite a bit of money as the odds are quite heavy at Bet365:
Arsenat to qualify: 21/1
Bayern to qualify: 1/100
