Champions League: Entertaining draw between Shakhtar and Dortmund
Mats Hummels' header three minutes from time earned Borussia Dortmund a deserved draw with two away goals in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk. The home side might feel hard done though as they led twice, first through Darijo Srna's powerful free kick and then through Douglas Costa's beautiful finish after a soft touch to control the ball. Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski pulled the Germans level before the break, taking advantage of a mix-up in the Ukrainian defence while Hummels scored the final goal on another lapse of the home side's defence. Shakhtar captain Srna opened the scoring with a well taken free kick, a dipping effort that went past goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller from 30 yards out. The home side nearly made it 2-0 minutes later when Schmelzer rescued Dortmund with a great headed clearance. The Germans managed to hang in there and struck before half time when Lewandowski was left totally unmarked following a mix-up inside the area between Dmytro Chygrynskiy and Fernandinho. Brazilian Taison, signed by Shakhtar in January for around 12 million pounds, was the main threat in the first half and his replacement after the break, Douglas Costa, was the man who pulled the home side ahead again. The Brazilian forward controlled Hubschman's long ball with extreme accuracy and fired home. Dortmund reacted and came close through Lewandowski but the home side appeared in control. That was until three minutes from time when Dmytro Chygrynskiy lost Hummels inside the penalty area on a corner kick and the German defender headed into the back of the net. Dortmund are now favourites to qualify and they seem to be rising through the outright winners odds as well. Bet365 have them priced at 7/1 for an outright competition win while Shakhtar are priced at 66/1.
