The IOC executive board eliminated wresting from the 2020 games on Tuesday. IOC President Jacques Rogge is scheduled to meet with wrestling's governing body to discuss the possibility of getting the sport back into the 2020 Olympic Games.
The decision is attracting plenty of criticism from wrestling organizations around the globe.
On Wednesday Rogge was contacted by the president of the International Wresting Federation (FILA), Raphael Martinetti, in an attempt to encourage the inclusion of wrestling in 2020.
"We agreed we would meet at the first opportunity to have discussions," Rogge said at a news conference. "I should say FILA reacted well to this disheartening news for them.
"They vowed to adapt the sport and vowed to fight to be eventually included in the 2020 slot."
Wrestling will be included in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with the possibility of being present in 2020 if the IOC's decision can be overturned.
Wrestling is now one of seven sports applying for a spot in the 2020 program. Other hopefuls include baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and the martial art of wushu.
IOC officials indicated that three sports may be considered and this could include wrestling.
"The vote of yesterday is not an elimination of wrestling from the Olympic Games," Rogge said. "Wrestling will participate in the games in Rio de Janeiro. To the athletes who train now, I say, 'Continue training for your participation in Rio. Your federation is working for the inclusion in the 2020 Games.'"
