Update: Police Identified Dead Plymouth Bookie Shop Robber
More details have become available about the story of the masked man who tried to rob a Plymouth bookie shop Friday evening and died on the job after being stopped by two punters who were present at the time of the robbery. The man has been identified as Alan Levers (50) and according to the police, he had just been released from prison for robbery. It didn't take him long to relapse and try another robbery, bursting into the betting shop wearing a gasmask and pulling out what appeared to be a pistol – as it turned out later, it was a replica, but that would have been hard to detect at the time of the attempted robbery. Plymouth police commander Andy Bickley, commented on the whole thing, saying that while the gun appeared to have been an imitation pistol, "there would have been no way of knowing this at the time of the incident. The actions taken by members of the public in the shop were brave and showed a disregard for their own safety.”
