British sprinter Mark Cavendish won the opening stage of the Tour of San Luis in Argentina on his debut for his new team, Omega Pharma-QuickStep. The sprinter launched his attack 200m from the line, holding off Italians Sacha Modolo and Alessandro Petacchi to snatch victory.
"The team did a great job for me," said Cavendish. "The guys rode so strong and stayed with me the whole day. It is so nice to have a team with me that is 100% committed."
Cavendish endured a frustrating season with Team Sky in 2012 which saw him giving up on his sprinter ambitions in order to support Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins. That pushed Cavendish to quit the British outfit for his new Belgian team.
Cavendish added: "It feels good to be fresh with a good bunch of guys and on such a fast bike. The guys really looked after me, so I had 100% energy at the finish. I'm so happy I could win." There are six stages left in the Tour of San Luis, two of which are sprinter friendly and therefore offer Cavendish another opportunity for victory.
Two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador was awarded the same time as Cavendish after finishing in the bunch. Contador is the favourite to win this year's Tour de France, Bet365 have him priced at 1/1 for an outright win, while last year's winner Bradley Wiggins is priced at 7/1.
