Capital One Cup: Swansea stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge
Swansea won at Chelsea for the first time in 87 years to gain a significant advantage before the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg. The home side dominated the match in the first half but an error from defender Branislav Ivanovic allowed Michu to score the opening goal. Chelsea continued to press forward but Ivanovic made another costly mistake in stoppage time when Danny Graham intercepted his poor backpass to make it 2-0. Demba Ba put one into the back of the net for Chelsea moments before the final whistle but it was ruled offside. The win puts Swansea firmly in command before the second leg at the Liberty Stadium on 23 January. Swansea are keen on ending a 100-year wait for a first major trophy. Chelsea had a good start to the game, they dominated possession but they were unable to create too many clear cut chances. The first good chance came on 11 minutes when Oscar and Eden Hazard created a gap for Ramires but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel. The next oportunity was in the 26th minute when Hazard squared it for Juan Mata but the Spaniard's shot was caught by Tremmel. Mata had another chance minutes later but he sent his shot just wide and just when Chelsea seemed more likely to score, Swansea punished them. The goal came six minutes before the break as Ivanovic got robbed by Jonathan de Guzman, who then passed to Michu who curled the shot past goalkeeper Ross Turnbull to take his season tally to 16 goals. Chelsea restarted the attacks after the interval but David Luiz was denied by the goalkeeper on a good effort just before the hour mark. Frank Lampard and Demba Ba were sent in to pace the attack but it was Swansea who scored again as Ivanovic's backpass was intercepted by Graham who rounded the keeper before firing into the empty net. Chelsea finally scored through Demba Ba minutes later but the goal was ruled offside. Swansea are now the favourites to win the Capital One Cup at Bet365, they are priced at 6/5 while Chelsea are priced at 5/2 and Aston Villa at 7/2.
