Bradford City stun Aston Villa in Capital One Cup semi final
Bradford City pulled off another stunning Capital One Cup shock: victory over Aston Villa at Valley Parade. The League Two side is 60 places beneath Premier League Villa but they established a crucial advantage in the semi-final first leg. Nahki Wells gave the home side a first-half advantage while goalkeeper Matt Duke produced a string of amazing saves to keep Villa at bay. Rory McArdle doubled Bradford's lead with a powerful header 13 minutes from time, then Andreas Weimann clawed one back for Aston Villa but Carl McHugh headed home on a corner kick two minutes from time to give the League Two side a two-goal advantage before the second leg. After disposing of Arsenal in the quarter-final, Bradford City stand 90 minutes from becoming the first side from the lowest tier to reach the final of this competition since Rochdale in 1962. Villa's Belgian summer signing Benteke had no less than four clear chances to give Villa a great start inside the opening 15 minutes but was twice denied by the goalkeeper and headed two other good opportunities off target. Bradford took advantage of those missed opportunities and took the lead after 20 minutes as Wells put a powerful finish past goalkeeper Shay Given. Then the home side pushed for a second goal and Jim Hanson came close as his header was hacked off the line by Fabian Delph. At the other end of the pitch goalkeeper Duke continued his fantastic night with another string of good saves which kept the score at 1-0 after 45 minutes. Darren Bent was sent in for Aston Villa after the break and he had a good chance from six yards but headed the ball over the bar. Bradford added a second goal 13 minutes from time as Gary Jones drilled in a cross that was headed home by McArdle. Villa managed to pull one back through Weimann but Bradford were too enthusiastic to be denied and they restored the two-goal advantage with two minutes late as McHugh headed a corner kick into the back of the net.
