Bizarre News from Taiwan Betting Market
The general public was shocked by the revelation that gamblers in the Republic of Taiwan bet on when terminally ill cancer patients will die, the China Press reports. The punters, whose behavior defies basic levels of decency and sensitivity, reportedly include the patients' family members and even the doctors betting amounts up to NT$100 million. This bizarre group charges a membership fee of NT$2,000 from the unofficial bookies who run the scheme and visit hospitals to request permission from the patients' families for their critically ill relatives to be included into the bet lists. The next step for the bookies is taking the gamblers to the hospital to observe the patients. China press further reports that there are already more than 10 gaming houses in Taizhong city, set up by senior citizens' clubs. "According to the rules, the bookies win if the cancer patients die within a month. However, if they die between one and six months after the bets were placed, the gamblers would be paid three times their wager," China Press concludes.
