Sportech plc Gets US License for Horseracing Online Wagering
An announcement came this week from Sportech plc, a UK-based operator and supplier of pools and tote gaming, that it has obtained permission to exclusively operate online wagering on all horse racing in the state of Connecticut, US. Thanks to an approval obtained by subsidiary Sportech Venues, Inc. from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, Account Wagering via the Internet will become available to Connecticut residents 18 years of age and older, in accordance with State law and regulation. The approval was granted under Sportech's existing license enabling it to provide exclusive pari-mutuel wagering in perpetuity on horseracing, greyhound racing and jai alai in the state of Connecticut, offered through telephone wagering and off-track betting locations. According to a company spokesman, the online Account Wagering platform will go live by April 2013, and it was added by Sportech group chief executive, Ian Penrose that "When we acquired our North American business two years ago, we gave commitments to the regulators that we would improve the business for all of our customers and employees in the state of Connecticut. We are delighted that we are now able to extend our offering to include exclusive wagering on horseracing on the internet, in addition to our existing retail and telephone exclusive wagering services. We will continue to build our business by offering secure, legal, pari-mutuel wagering on horseracing."
