Chinese Police Breaks Big Online Gambling Ring
A report arrived this week that an illegal online gambling ring has been busted by police in Shanghai, China, where a Shanghai Cyber Police spokesman said that prior to the bust, the authorities conducted a three-month investigation into the ring which reportedly generated more than 70 billion yuan ($11.2 billion) in wagers since January. He added that in the breakup of the biggest gambling operation so far, the police arrested over 50 suspects, seized 3 million yuan in cash and froze 10 million yuan of clients' money. Apparently the ring made money by offering Chinese online punters to wager on soccer games and online casino games with the help of unidentified overseas gambling websites. The investigation showed that a major figure in the gang surnamed Shou often visited an overseas website, and the spokesman specified: "We found that the ring was using that website to manage its accounts. They had connections with more than 20 overseas gambling websites." The operation, powered by an unidentified gambling software from abroad, offered its clients to bet on European soccer games, including UEFA Champions League matches. "The ring has had a very bad effect on society. We have found office workers and university students who have gambled away all of their money, and even their parents' apartments," the spokesman concluded.
