Maryland Legalizes Online Fantasy Sports Betting
After creating a lot of confusion with its position that online fantasy sports betting is illegal even though there are carve-outs in the federal legislation, the US state of Maryland finally saw its legislature pass a law that lets Marylanders take the pool from a friends' fantasy football league. The new law, effective October 1st this year, makes room for a new wave of legal online sports betting, especially having in mind that there are thousands of state residents who spend millions of dollars online in daily or weekly fantasy sports leagues. Thereby, Marylanders are now able to win prizes, including cash, in Fantasy Football leagues. Reportedly, all major fantasy sports sites have already removed Maryland from their list of banned states, which still includes states like Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana and Alaska.
