Champions League round-up: Bayern stunned in Belarus, Man Utd survive scare
Bayern Munich's perfect start to the season came to an abrupt end as they were on the wrong end of a shocking result at BATE Borisov in Champions League Group F. The 2011 finalists, who won their first 10 matches in all competitions, lost 3-1 at minnows BATE. There were no such problems for Group G leaders Barcelona who won comfortably at Benfica. GROUP E Shakhtar Donetsk were top of the group at the start of the day and it seemed they would build upon that lead when Alex Teixeira put them ahead in the first half at Juventus. But Leonardo Bonucci scored with a first-time finish from Andrea Pirlo's corner and it finished 1-1, even though Shakhtar had quite a few great chances late in the game. The result ended Shakhtar's 21-match winning streak in all competitions and allowed Chelsea to bounce to the top of the group table following their comfortable 4-0 win at FC Nordsjaelland. GROUP F Bayern Munich had never lost their second match in the Champions League group stages, but that record came to pieces at surprising BATE Borisov. The four-time champions from Germany fell behind to a low finish by Aleksandr Pavlov in Belarus, then Vitali Rodionov found the top corner to double BATE's lead and although Franck Ribery reduced the deficit, Renan Bressan rounded off a historic victory deep into stoppage time. That made it six points from a possible six for the Belarusians, who are three points clear of Valencia, who won 2-0 at home to bottom-placed Lille. GROUP G Celtic grabbed an important 3-2 win at Spartak Moscow but they were remain second in the group as Barcelona prevailed 2-0 at Benfica. Barca's fifth consecutive win over Benfica was staged by Lionel Messi who provided assists for both Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas. GROUP H Galatasaray were expected to defeat Braga at home but the Portuguese side was resolute in defence and clinical upfront. Braga took a first-half lead through Ruben Micael and doubled their advantage on 94 minutes when captain Alan converted Eder's centre. Braga find themselves third in Group H behind CFR Cluj on goal difference and leaders Manchester United, who won 2-1 at Cluj. Sir Alex Ferguson's men found themselves one goal down after 15 minutes but they fought back and won the game thanks to Robin van Persie, who bagged a brace. Bet365 have Barcelona as 9/4 favourites to win the Champions League this season, followed by Real Madrid at 7/2 and Manchester United at 10/1.
