Mounting Complaints about Online Sports Betting Scams in Australia
New South Wales police have to react Recent reports in the Australian media indicate that a betting ring led by a Queensland man is making a luxurious living out of an online sports betting scam, which is now being investigated by the local police in New South Wales. The whole situation became apparent after numerous complaints started arriving months ago from online gamblers, who were promised big returns for their deposits, which of course, did not come to happen. The subsequent investigation identified over a dozen sports betting related websites linked to the Queensland suspect. However, when it came to the arrest of the Queensland leader of the ring, for which NSW investigators requested authority, they were directed to the Queensland police to which they were to refer the case in compliance with provincial protocols. It was reported in the media at the time that "The investigation, including a listing of more than a dozen websites, IP addresses, bank account details and residential addresses seen by SC were handed over to the Queensland Police fraud investigation unit in January this year." Still, the investigators in Queensland proved to be less prompt than expected and this led to serious procrastination in the action on the case, as at least two of the sites keep operating and suspects remain at large, still being able to defraud punters. On their side, the Queensland Police only commented that "...the matter is currently being assessed by the Fraud and Corporate Crime Group [and] it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage," but at the same time, media report that complaints from victims impacted by the scam "...pour into NSW police on an almost daily basis. Late last week, it received separate reports of victims being scammed $60,000 and $56,000, and two cases of individuals losing $20,000 to the same betting scam." So, in order to caution punters, the NSW police investigation revealed a web of legitimate-looking scam sites operated by the Queensland man, some of which have been in the business for around 4 years. One of the sites that remain operable is Tablink Sportsbet, which under the mask of a legitimate betting site with a user portal apparently scammed victims for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also, the police identified the Excellence IV website, a so-called sports arbitrage portal, which they claim offered “high yield, short-term investment solutions that capitalise in fluctuations in the sporting market” with a minimum deposit of $5,000, promising “the most effective returns” from trading on “global sports trading markets” using proprietary technology that “guarantees high profits” from “100 per cent risk free” investments. And another site which deprived people of many thousands of dollars is Proficient Sports, which scored very well, costing some of the individuals $90,000 and unwary investor groups as much as half a million dollars.
