Early goals secure winning start for Chelsea
Eden Hazard made an impressive Premier League debut for Chelsea as they went past a resilient Wigan to win 2-0. The Belgian midfielder provided a great assist for Branislav Ivanovic who bagged the first goal inside the opening two minutes of play. Hazard was then felled for the penalty which allowed Frank Lampard to double Chelsea's lead after just six minutes. Wigan's Victor Moses was the one who replied as he twice tested Chelsea keeper Petr Cech while Jordi Gomez headed one chance off target and then sent a volley wide late in the game. Victor Moses started for Wigan despite manager Roberto Martinez suggesting that his 21-year-old striker could be unsettled by speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea. The Nigerian striker produced an impressive performance to show why Chelsea are interested in buying him. Chelsea were quite happy with their early two-goal lead and Wigan went on to dominate large chunks of play. However, they created few clear chances as their numerous crosses into the Chelsea box were easily handled by experienced centre-backs David Luiz and John Terry. Substitute Fernado Torres came close to making it 3-0 late in the game but his effort was cleared off the line by fellow Spaniard Ramis. It was an unimpressive display from Chelsea overall as they had just six shots, their fewest in a Premier League game since September 2007. Another interesting fact is that Wigan have only lost three of their last 11 Premier League matches, but two of those losses were to Chelsea. Last but not least, The Blues are unbeaten on opening day in the Premier League since 1998.
